ANCWL take over National Women's Event- statement by Mrs Zukiswa Hlekiso-Thabaneng - UDEMWO National Treasurer (10 August 2010)

The United Democratic Women’s Movement (UDEMWO) is appalled by the behaviour of the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) at a National Women’s Day event in the Eastern Cape yesterday. The Eastern Cape Legislature had promised transport to all political parties for their constituencies to attend the event. This changed at the eleventh hour when it turned out that only ANC supporters would receive transport. The UDM and the DA had then decided to not attend the event in support of their constituencies.

To add further insult, the ANC women booed COPE women to such an extent that the State President had to intervene. When will the ANC learn to differentiate between the National Events and ANC rallies? They forget that these National Events are funded by taxpayers’ money.

UDEMWO would like to see a situation where South African women are united in their fight against the economic and societal ills that affect all our daily lives. This behaviour by the ANCWL is deplorable and they should be ashamed of themselves; they do not deserve to be associated with the women of South Africa.
