Baby deaths in Gauteng - statement by Mrs Thandi Nontenja - Member of UDEMWO NEC (23 July 2010)

The United Democratic Women's Organisation is encouraged to hear that Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has decided to investigate allegations of negligence following six baby deaths at a Johannesburg state hospital.

After a week of denial and hand washing it has now been made known that a particular team of nurses have been accused of negligence of the worst degree; allegedly gossiping whilst the babies were left with vomit on their little faces and to lie in wet and soiled incubators.

We are relieved that at least one politician in the province realised what a major injustice has occurred.

Our hearts go out to the parents of these children; those that perpetrated this crime must be brought to book.
