|Memo to the Minister S Ndebele, Minister of Transport, regarding "Gauteng BRT-related police harrasment of taxi operators" from the UDM President (15 April 2010)|
The abovementioned matter refers. The chairperson, Mr AS Majozi, of the Witwatersrand Taxi Association (WOTA) and the Johannesburg Taxi Association (JTA) called me this morning appealing that I should intervene on behalf of these associations.
According to him the police raided his house at 1am on Sunday 11 April; other taxi operators were also targeted in a similar manner. They and their families were beaten up by the police during these raids. He alleges that these assaults result from them being singled out as opponents of the BRT.
Mr Majozi also reported that the taxi associations are being forcefully removed from their routes without being provided an alternative. Permits are not being issued to the taxi operators and the interim permits are not being recognised by traffic and metro police. Taxi operators claim regular harassment on the roads by the police and traffic police, which results in vehicles being impounded and held for excessive release-fines.
