No traffic police in Eastern Cape over weekends - statement by Chief SZ Ntapane, UDM Member of the National Assembly (8 December 2009)

The UDM is shocked to learn that during this festive season there will be no provincial traffic police working over weekends in the Eastern Cape.

It is a critical situation as provincial roads during this period experience a major increase in traffic volumes and accidents because of many people returning home from jobs elsewhere in the country, along with many tourists visiting the province on holiday.

We are aware that KwaZulu Natal finds itself in similar financial troubles, but still they have found a way to budget for the necessary over-time.

The current situation is life-threatening and requires immediate intervention, if necessary from National Government. Once again the people of the Eastern Cape are being left in the lurch by a provincial government that has little regard for their needs and aspirations.
