At last: bringing back of school inspectors - statement by Mr Ntopile Kganyago, MP - UDM Education Spokesperson (11 November 2009)

The UDM welcomes the Minister of Basic Education’s admission that the current system of evaluating teachers’ performance is not working.

The UDM has long been fighting for an education system where teachers teach and students study. The culture of learning and discipline must be restored. The UDM believes that the re-introduction of school inspectors will have a positive impact on proper discipline in our schools.

We call on the Minister to be decisive; in order for South Africa’s children to reap the benefit of a good education, there must to be a benchmark of what constitutes a good teacher. The only way to measure teachers’ performance against an acceptable benchmark is by having school inspectors evaluating them.
