Back-to-basis stance by Education Minister - statement by Mr Ntopile Kganyago, MP - UDM Education Spokesperson (3 November 2009)

The UDM is encouraged by recent remarks by the Minister of Basic Education that schools must focus on the basics of reading, writing and counting.

It is good to see signs of the necessary political will by the Education Minister to translate the large education budget into real education. Teachers must teach; students must study; and a culture of learning and discipline must be restored.

The UDM has long argued that our education system is in crisis and that our children are not getting the basic education they deserve leaving them ill-equipped to find employment.

We hope that the Minister’s remarks will translate into real changes for our learners and that she is not just another in a string of ANC Education Ministers who make promises, such as addressing illiteracy and numeracy, and does not deliver.
