UDM applauds IEC for maintaining principles statement by the UDM National Organiser (08 December 2008)

The United Democratic Movement wishes to applaud the Independent Electoral Commission on its decision to stand up to the ANC over the ruling party's application for a high court interdict, after failing to register its members in time for the by-elections.

We commend the IEC for not sacrificing its principles, especially in the case where there are other political parties to be considered.

This is just one of several examples where the ANC is attempting to bend the rules to its advantage. The court action against COPE, which sidesteps established electoral dispute procedures, is another instance where the IEC is contesting the ruling party's behaviour.

We applaud the IEC for showing resilience and hope that this is not just a passing fad.
