Crime and Violence at school statement by UDM Spokesperson for Education (14 July 2008)

The latest figures on sexual harassment and violence against the female learners at schools as revealed in a study conducted in seven of the nine provinces by the National Education Department and Unicef is a disgrace for this country.

Drastic measures should be taken to address this unacceptable situation. We call upon the Department of Education to immediately improve security at all schools. Action must be taken against the perpetrators of these barbaric acts.

Criminal and violent activities in school yards have reached epidemic proportions, and it is high time that the Minister of Education, Mrs Naledi Pandor should start to be more serious about it. Government cannot keep on singing the same song forever, now is the time for the Minister to show real commitment in addressing this situation. Enough is enough. Let's say no to crime and violence in schools.
