Western Cape police abusing sex workers media statement by the UDM Chief Whip (1 July 2008)

It is disgusting that police officers in Cape Town are allegedly compelling sex workers to have sex with them to avoid arrest or secure their release from custody. This was revealed in a recent report by the Institute for Security Studies.

These are very serious allegations that must be investigated as matter of urgency. How do those individual police persons who are involved in this unethical and senseless act expect the public to respect them and abide with the law, whilst they themselves transgressors of the same law?

The UDM calls upon the MEC of Safety and Security in the Western Cape to immediately appoint a Commission of Inquiry to investigate these allegations. Those found to be involved in such barbaric activities should be brought to book.
