NPA boss should withdraw circular that preempts Parliamentary processes media statement by the UDM President (25 January 2008)

The UDM notes that acting National Prosecuting Authority Director Mpshe has purportedly distributed a circular to Scorpions members informing them that their integration into the SAPS is a done deal. We believe that he has jumped the gun, and call on him to withdraw the circular.

As far as the nation has been informed, the Cabinet is still considering the matter at its lekgotla currently under way.

Even if Cabinet does decide to proceed with that decision, Parliament still needs to go through a whole process, including public hearings. It's called democracy: the ruling party cannot simply make dubious decisions and sidestep the Cabinet, Parliament and proper public participation to implement them.

How can the NPA Director inform Scorpions staff that the decision is a fait accompli? Indeed he should withdraw the circular because he is acting upon a decision made by an organisation outside government. His circular can only serve to sow confusion among Scorpions staff.
