Whilst the Minister of Finance
boasts about South Africa's economic growth to the international monetary conference, he
fails to acknowledge that this growth is not matched by equal growth in employment.
Regrettably, we have heard this song before. President Mbeki is also fond of reminding us
of the country's economic success, even though unemployment and poverty remains at
unacceptably high levels. Under ANC rule, the gap between the have's and the have -nots
has grown. Where is government's new and original plans to address job creation and
poverty? Growth without improving the basic living condition of the masses
is just a hollow economic victory.
We contend that government is not doing enough and a skewed economic policy approach is
leading to the neglect of social policy questions.
