The UDM believes that the report tabled before
the Portfolio Committee regarding the escape of Annanias Mathe from C-Max Prison is not
credible. After a joint investigation involving even the National Intelligence Agency
there still isn't clarity in the report about many matters relating to the escape.
Shockingly, the issue of prison warder complicity is not resolved.
We believe this report and the purported investigation it represents was a waste of
taxpayer money and has merely wasted the time of all involved and delayed the exposure and
prosecution of corrupt prison officials. The Minister must be held accountable for
providing unclear terms of reference and not ensuring a better investigation was
conducted. Mathe is not the only prisoner to have escaped - although his was a high
profile case - the number of escapes from prison, police holding cells and courts raises
the question of how easily criminals can buy their way out of custody.
The Minister must demonstrate his commitment and seriousness by acknowledging that the
current report is flawed and appoint an independent Judicial Commission of Inquiry. |
