| This past weekend the UDM
convened a successful National Congress attended by 2000 UDM delegates,
plus observers from the diplomatic corps and civil society. We launched
the UDM Local Government Election Manifesto, tabled the next phase of nine
documents in our ongoing policy development process and mapped the way
forward in terms of party-building. Many resolutions were adopted by the National Congress. One such resolution was that UDM members, who are also members of Cosatu by virtue of being workers, must call the leadership of Cosatu, especially Mr Vavi, to order for issuing statements on their behalf in support of people charged with corruption. Another resolution that was adopted was that the UDM will campaign for electoral reform, since the current system does not promote accountability amongst public representatives. The National Congress condemned the floor-crossing legislation as a threat to the growth of multi-party democracy in the country. The National Congress also resolved that Government should take stern action against Government officials, such as the Minister of Health, for dragging their feet on implementing HIV/AIDS policies as budgeted for and approved by Parliament. The National Congress also called on all South Africans to take charge and take ownership of the municipal elections, not only during the voting, but afterwards as well to monitor whether councils and councillors are delivering; the community must be informed, become involved, demand their rights and become more than voting cattle for the ruling party. Hence the title of the UDM Local Government Election Manifesto is: Community-driven Corruption-free Service Delivery. The National Congress also elected the new term of national leadership for the UDM: National Chairperson - Mr B Msomi Deputy National Chairperson - Mr H Sogoni President - Mr Holomisa Deputy President - Mr Kganyago Secretary General - Mr H Nobongoza Deputy Secretary General - Mr L Luwaca National Treasurer - Mrs T Nontenja National Organiser - Mrs T Msiza Deputy National Organiser - Mr S Saule Deputy National Organiser - Mr B Mthembu National Fundraiser - Mr L Gaehler National Spokesperson - Mr S Khonco |
