Expulsion of UDM members - media statement issued by UDM President (31 August 2005)
The UDM constitution sets high standards for its members and public representatives. Every person who accepts membership of the UDM enters into a contract with the party to abide by those standards. It is understood that nobody joins or accepts office in the party if they do not fully agree with this contract. The extensive provisions regulating the conduct of UDM members and public representatives are meant to ensure the stability and good reputation of the party, because this is what our supporters and voters expect. Clearly, people do not vote for parties in order to be embarrassed and disappointed by its members or public representatives.

In the past few weeks a number of UDM members have acted in clear contravention of the letter and spirit of the UDM constitution. These actions include repeatedly bringing the party into disrepute with unwarranted and deceitful comments in various media. The obvious result has been to cause great distress to the party’s supporters and voters. These members and those who purport to speak for them have repeatedly told outrageous lies, and launched at every opportunity personal attacks on the leader of the party.

Notwithstanding extensive provisions in the UDM constitution for members to raise concerns and disputes, or resolve disputes, these members have consistently avoided these provisions. The only conclusion that the UDM can draw from these members’ consistent dishonesty and disloyalty is that they are pursuing a campaign to destabilise our party. We owe it to our supporters and voters to act against such blatant destabilisation.

The UDM NEC has therefore resolved today to expel with immediate effect: Mr M Diko, Mr Z Siswana, Mr I Kekana, Mr M Gogo, Mrs M Mdaka, and Mrs P Mncedane.

The UDM believes that South African voters expect and deserve responsible and accountable politicians. People will lose faith in multi-party democracy if this legitimate expectation is not met. These expelled members apparently don’t feel any obligation to meet this expectation of the voters.
