The UDM noted with interest the launch yesterday in the Western Cape of the so-called “New UDF” by Cosatu and assorted others.
Cosatu leaders have been reported as saying that they continue to support the ruling party and remain committed to the ruling alliance, yet simultaneously seek a vehicle to oppose major aspects of the ruling party’s policies. So which is it? It looks like a case of Cosatu having their cake and eating it.
Cosatu represents an important section of our society but they need to decide what they want. Increasingly the trade federation is portraying a confused and schizophrenic approach on many issues. Are they supporting the former Deputy President’s right to a trial or opposing it? Are they campaigning for the ANC in elections or fighting GEAR? Are they part of the ruling alliance or in opposition?
From what we have seen of this “New UDF” we don’t notice anything new being added to the national debate; admittedly, the overall noise volume is going up, but the policy content is not increasing. There are already many political parties in the opposition working towards the same goals ostensibly pursued by the “New UDF”. We call upon Cosatu to make up their minds about how they want to pursue their goals and if it is no longer in the ruling alliance they are welcome to come and join us in the opposition. |
