ANC Women's League has thrown away their credibility - media statement issued by President of the UDM Women's Organisation (13 June 2005)
The UDM Women’s Organisation is disappointed by the weekend announcement of the ANC Women’s League in support of Jacob Zuma. Up to this point the ANC Women’s League had shown an admirable level of restraint in comparison with the reckless comments emanating from other quarters in the Tripartite Alliance. For many people this was a sign of political maturity in women’s politics. That credibility was destroyed by their ringing endorsement of Jacob Zuma over the weekend.

Whilst we could hardly have expected from them a denouncement of Mr Zuma, their endorsement of him has amply demonstrated how their previous principled stance has crumbled before expediency. It is a ridiculous position that they have adopted where the presumption of innocence trumps and completely whitewashes the serious crimes in which Mr Zuma have been implicated.

Many of the key witnesses in the Shaik trial were women who braved former male bosses in court, and were later described by the judge to be honest, credible and principled people. These women were a shining example of what women can contribute to the workplace. But the ANC Women’s League have with their new position sold these women out. The message is being sent by the ruling party and its women’s chapter that women in the workplace should never dare to oppose wrongdoing where men are involved. In other words a women’s place is to be serve unquestioningly and not to think for herself. This is a shocking position for the ANC Women’s League to adopt since they have always been saying that women have an equal place in society, in business and politics; that women have a special moral contribution to make. But now when the chips are down the ANC Women’s League is jumping when told to jump. Where is that special moral leadership contribution now?
