Condolences and tribute to late Max Mpahlwa - letter of condolence from Bantu Holomisa, MP UDM President (13 April 2005)

The United Democratic Movement extends its condolences to the Mpahlwa family on the passing away of Maxwell Mpahlwa.

I remember the late Maxwell Mpahlwa as a successful entrepreneur. In Umtata he was known to many people, and we affectionately called him Bhuti Max. Many people will agree with me when I say that he was a flexible gentleman. While he was focussing on his business, his wife was involved in many community projects, like promoting social functions for the youth etc. His sons on the other hand were heavily involved in the Struggle and they, like others, faced the wrath of the Apartheid laws and ended up in exile. But despite all those sacrifices that he made with his family – to build communities with his wife, and his sons fighting for the liberation of our country – Bhuti Max would stay calm, and you wouldn’t notice any strain or stress in him. In the late 1980’s when the military assumed power in the then Transkei we consistently had informal talks about economic and politically related issues.

I fondly remember Bhuti Max, the late Mr Mbambisa – a member of my former cabinet, and the late Mr Calaza – DG in my office at the time, all of them belonging to the same clan, Tembus, Oqhudeni. I remember whenever they had social functions at their homes I would always be invited, but immediately I stepped inside their homes the protocol changed and I was reduced from head of state to waiter in order to see to it that guests were fed and provided with drinks! It was during times like these where one engaged informally on different economic and political topics, and where opinions and views were expressed freely and openly.

I would like to salute Bhuti Max for his sterling contribution and advice. I am one of many who benefited from his pep-talks. To his wife and children, we know how painful it is to lose a person of Bhuti Max’s calibre, but I think you would agree with me when I say that he has contributed to the region and the country. On behalf of the UDM, and indeed on behalf of my family, please accept my sincerest condolences.

Unfortunately due to a prior engagement to attend a National Executive Committee meeting of the UDM in Pretoria, I will not be able to attend the funeral. However, I will be there with you in spirit.

May Almighty God be with the family as they grieve this great loss.
