GOVERNMENT URGED TO MAKE EARTH SUMMIT A SUCCESS

STATEMENT ISSUED BY PROF MTUTUZELI MBADI, MP UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AND TOURISM

The UDM expresses its support for The World Summit on Sustainable Development (Earth Summit). However, certain concerns must be addressed to ensure the success of the summit, not only in terms of its content and resolutions but also in terms of the potential for direct economic benefits for South Africa.

Firstly, we note that Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism has promised that South African taxpayers will cover less than half the cost of the conference. It is vital that this promise is fulfilled or we face the risk of investing more than we gain. Secondly, the conference organisers and government must create a climate and facilities conducive to the holding of this conference, to ensure that the expected 60 000 delegates actually cometo South Africa.

The need for planned sustainable development is now more than ever a critical factor for the success of South Africa and the world. It is for that reason that planned sustainable development is a key feature of the UDM's new policy proposals.
