STATEMENT ISSUED BY MALIZOLE DIKO
UDM NATIONAL SECRETARY
United Democratic Movement (UDM) is encouraged by reports of South Africa's
Singita Private Game Reserve, which was rated number one in the world at the
prestigious Conde Nast Traveller's 2001 Readers' Choice Awards in New York.
This is exactly the kind of international publicity that the South African (SA)
tourism industry desperately needs. The Singita Private Game Reserve should be
commended for this sterling performance; such representation should serve as an
inspiration to other tourism professionals.
This accolade should also stimulate the SA tourism industry to such a level that
it can truly make a difference to our grassroots people in terms of employment
and wealth creation.
Tourism is the most under-exploited industry in South- and Southern Africa. The
UDM recognises the huge potential which tourism can have in job creation and
Local communities must be encouraged to participate in the development and the
maintenance of the industry (i.e. selling of artisan and crafts in protecting
the local environment, enhancing local services etc.) and be sensitised to the
immense benefits that tourism can bring, especially through job creation.
Although Singita's achievement bodes well for tourism as a whole, the UDM is
concerned about the current safety situation in the country that are to say the
least, not conducive for the sustainability and/or growth of this industry.
Government has a responsibility to ensure the safety of tourists through
increased policing efforts, especially in high traffic areas of tourism.
