UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

HIV/AIDS SPENDING MUST BE CORRECTLY ADMINISTERED

STATEMENT ISSUED BY BANTU HOLOMISA, MP
UDM PRESIDENT

The UDM welcomes the intention of government to sharply increase the provincial grants to combat HIV/AIDS, as announced by the Minister of Finance yesterday in Parliament.

However, the UDM expresses its concern that these monetary allocations may not reach the people who most desperately need it. Because government still fails to acknowledge the monumental nature of the pandemic, this increased allocation is for many, too little too late.

The UDM calls on government to ensure that especially the poor and the vulnerable receive the benefits from the boost in social spending. The  UDM urges the Minister of Health to amicably settle the court case that is looming regarding Mother-to-Child Transmission, especially in light of this increased spending by government.

The UDM calls on government to educate the President who seemingly is still in denial with regards to this major pandemic.
