UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

DISGRACE TO SAPS VIP UNIT

STATEMENT ISSUED BY MS. ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

The appearance of yet another member of the VIP unit in court on charges of attempted murder, assault, crimen injuria, damage to state property, intimidation, shooting of a firearm in a municipal area and the pointing of a firearm is a disgrace.

These charges are compounded by the officer allegedly being in a drunken stupor, and alleged having made racial comments. This highly unacceptable behaviour further tarnishes the reputation of officers in this unit and the SAPS collectively. Behaviour like this contributes to the negative public perception of the SAPS.

The UDM calls on the Minister of Safety and Security to urgently implement programmes aimed at addressing skills development of these officers to better equip them to express themselves and deal with stress in a responsible and mature manner. If the Minister fails to address the re-occurrence of criminal acts by members of the SAPS VIP unit it will add to the fast-dissipating public confidence.
