UDM welcomes the report of a meeting between President Mbeki and Minister
Buthelezi regarding the Director-General. It is high time that the problem be
conclusively dealt with.
However, such a meeting will be deemed useless if it is going to attempt to
artificially patch what has clearly become a shredded relationship. The UDM
therefore calls on the President and the Minister to dissect the issue to the
bone and to rid the Department from self-imposed shackles, even if it means
replacing the DG.
The Department of Home Affairs is sorely under-performing. The morale of the
employees is low and the breakdown of the relationship between the Minister and
the Director General is undisputedly a contributing factor.
The UDM calls on the President to put the Department's house in order, for only
then will officials be able to begin with the process of service delivery.
