STATEMENT
ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON HOME AFFAIRS
The
ongoing battle for control of the Department of Home Affairs has been fuelled
yet again, this time by allegations by the Minister of Home Affairs, who has
provided the members of the Portfolio Committee with a comprehensive document
attacking his Director-General. It is blatantly clear that the Department and
its officials are being drawn in opposite directions because of the complete
breakdown of communication and trust between the Minister and the DG.
The UDM calls on President Mbeki to immediately intervene in the matter between
the Minister and the Director-General of Home Affairs. Both appointments, that
of the Minister and the DG, were made by President Mbeki. He is ultimately
responsible to ensure that good governance and service delivery is achieved by
every government Department in South Africa.
President Mbeki cannot continue to ignore the collapse of the Department of Home
Affairs in the face of growing xenophobia, and children dying because they
cannot get welfare grants, as they do not have birth certificates. Further
perpetuating this pathetic and unacceptable state of affairs is the fact that
discussions of the prevailing unsatisfactory situation are blocked by the ANC at
every possible forum and in every possible way.
