UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

COLEMAN ANDREWS CONTINUES TO HAUNT SAA

STATEMENT ISSUED BY CEDRIC FROLICK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR PUBLIC ENTERPRISES

The UDM expresses its disgust at the announcement by the Chief Executive of SAA. It is totally unacceptable that close to 200 SAA managers will be retrenched within the next month, given the friendly treatment Mr. Coleman Andrews received. SAA must carefully explain their reasoning.

The UDM views this move as another bungle in the ongoing saga of SAA. Under the disguise of "cleaning up its management structure" SAA is adding to the already dire plight of the unemployed in South Africa, yet it saw fit to handsomely recompense Coleman Andrews amidst severe criticism.

It is exactly this type of behaviour that creates justifiably angry opposition against restructuring, especially when it occurs in the context of political interference. The UDM calls on the Minister of Public Enterprises, in conjunction with the Board of SAA to holistically review their strategy, and to plan to restructure the airline along responsible corporate lines, taking due consideration of the human cost of
retrenchments.
