UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

PUBLIC PROTECTOR SHOULD QUESTION PETER MARAIS IN  RYAN COETZEE INVESTIGATION

STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON ON SAFETY AND SECURITY

On the 23 August 2001 the UDM requested the Public Protector to investigate
the possible conflict of interest with the appointment of Mr. Ryan Coetzee during his period as consultant in the Unicity of Cape Town. The UDM also requested the Public Protector to investigate possible irregularities in Coetzee's simultaneous appointment as Consultant in the Unicity and the Western Cape Provincial government, as well as positions in Tony Leon's office apparently.

During a Media Conference held yesterday by the NNP component of the DA, Mr. Marais repeated a number of allegations against Mr. Ryan Coetzee that give further credence to these suspicions.

Mr. Marais during the conference said that Mr. Coetzee embarked upon activities without the necessary authority from the Unicity Exco. According to Mr. Marais these activities resulted in expenses for the Unicity and the ratepayers of Cape Town.

Following Mr Marais latest statements the UDM will request the Public Protector to interview Mr. Marais as part of its ongoing investigation. A letter in this regard has been forwarded to the Office of the Public Protector.
