A LESSON FOR PROF ASMAL

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY T.P. MAHLANGU
GENERAL SECRETARY, UNITED DEMOCRATIC STUDENTS' MOVEMENT

It is the view of the United Democratic Students' Movement (UDESMO) that the minister of education, Prof. Kader Asmal, needs to re-evaluate  what seems to be a "spoilt brat" attitude to problem solving. He needs to start dealing with problems in our education with a more mature, holistic and creative attitude.

Challenging a court decision will not provide a policy on the age that school-ready learners should be at private schools and the suspension of state subsidies to institutions of education might boost his ego, but will not provide clear policy on how, when and who should run tertiary institutions.

Perhaps what Prof. Asmal needs is a lesson or two on taking responsible and creative action towards problem solving. UDESMO congratulates and supports the action taken by thousands of teachers to prevent a strike that could have dealt our matriculants a fatal blow.

UDESMO would like to wish all matriculants, learners and students the best of luck as they face their end of the year examinations.
