STOP MASETLHA'S SALARY

STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE UDM CAUCUS

During the deliberation of the United Democratic Movement Caucus, the status of the legality of the contract of the Director General of Home Affairs, Billy Masetlha was discussed.

The UDM believes that since there is a question mark over the status of the DG of Home Affairs on the legality of his contract that payment of Billy Masetlha's salary should be stopped immediately and a process started to recover salaries that were paid to him since the lapse of his contract.

Its unthinkable that the ANC government can allow that a Department be held hostage by an individual who seemingly refuses to sign a performance agreement. Its is furthermore unacceptable that the possibility of unauthorised expenditure being incurred in the Department of Home Affairs on a daily basis, due to the possible illegality of the DG's contract. Such unauthorised expenditure will only be reported on by the Auditor General a full year from now, when its is a post-facto event.

The Department of Home Affairs is continuously under a cloud of suspicion. There is also clearly a breach of trust between the Minister of Home Affairs  and the DG. This situation cannot be allowed to continue, as it is now it impacts on good governance, sound financial management and service delivery.
