JUSTICE DEPARTMENT EXPOSED TO MASSIVE FRAUD

STATEMENT ISSUED BY JAKE MASEKA, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON ON JUSTICE AND CONSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The UDM is shocked that the Auditor General has discovered that the Department of Justice has exposed more than R 2 billion of taxpayer's money to fraud and corruption.

It is a sad reminder that the high levels of crime, fraud and corruption in South Africa, is to a large extent aided and abetted by the incompetence of a Department that should be leading the fight against these crimes.

The UDM notes that the Auditor General is of the opinion that these problems may take five years to correct. We assert that such a long period is unacceptable. Crime cannot be allowed to run rampant across SA because government needs time to get its act together. The President and Ministers responsible for the fight against crime must prioritise. It is time that this government demonstrates the backbone and political will to deal with crime, and the incompetence that encourages it.
