ANC SEES THE LIGHT ON FOREIGN INVOLVEMENT IN THE SECURITY INDUSTRY

STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON ON SAFETY AND SECURITY

The UDM welcomes the announcement by the Minister of Safety and Security that the ANC has backed down on its excessive demands regarding no foreign involvement in the security industry. It is a vindication of our view that a compromise on the issue could be found, without sacrificing complete control of this sensitive industry.

We also welcome the fact that continued foreign involvement in the industry would be linked to empowerment initiatives. We are of the opinion that the Bill in its current format provides enough checks and balances to ensure that the industry is run in the best interests of South Africa.

These new developments mean that the envisaged Security Industry Regulation Council will have to be even more vigilant in its monitoring of the industry.
