STATEMENT
ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON ON SAFETY AND SECURITY
The
UDM appreciates the complexity of foreign involvement in the private security
industry. Foreign investment remains central to the future success of the South
African economy.
It is in our opinion necessary to take the debate forward and we have therefore
proposed that middle ground can be found between the views calling for
unfettered foreign investment and those opposing any form of foreign involvement
or investment in the industry. The UDM has therefore proposed that the ANC
considers limiting foreign investment in the security industry, or any single
security company, to 20%. In addition that a reasonable transition period is
built into the law, and that foreign investors in the industry are encouraged to
make their shares available to current management and employees.
The UDM is of the opinion that such an approach will address fears that foreign
investment is being threatened, whilst ensuring that this sensitive industry
remains in the hands of South Africans.
