ANC MAYORS: GRAVY TRAIN IN MOTION?

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY MALIZOLE DIKO
UDM NATIONAL SECRETARY

"Lifestyles of the rich and famous" this is how recent reports on ANC mayors' frivolous and self enriching spending should read. The United Democratic Movement (UDM) finds such wastefulness deplorable and an insult to the suffering poor and homeless masses of our country.

It is quite clear how the ANC chooses to spend taxpayer's money; acquiring of expensive 4x4 vehicles seems the number one priority and next, the purchase and expansion of luxurious residences, with swimming pools and electronically controlled double garage doors behind which to park the pricey 4x4 no doubt.

Reports that an additional R300 000 is to be spent on Tshwane mayor's R2,5 million recently acquired residence, plus and additional R154 000 for running costs, highlights this trend amongst ANC mayors. Many of our esteemed mayors, justified buying expensive luxurious 4x4 vehicles, citing South Africa's "poor roads" as sufficient reason to make such purchases. Maybe such funds would have been better spent repairing those "poor roads"?

After last week's announcement of substantial pay hikes for local government representatives, surely ANC mayors all around South Africa will not longer have any excuse for non-delivery of basic services. When and where will the gravy train stop next?
