UDM WELCOMES COMMUNITY SERVICE

STATEMENT ISSUED BY UDM CAUCUS

The UDM welcomes the inclusion of nurses, psychologist, physiotherapists and other health care workers in government’s year-long community service programme.

It is important that these professionals plough back into this country, especially in the light of the fact that government so heavily subsidises their tuition. It is thus disheartening that some of these young professionals leave our country as soon as they qualify without having experienced and contributed to alleviating the harsh realities regarding health issues in our country.

It is necessary that all South Africans share their skills and help to build a better country. For years, company’s who subsidise the studies of engineers, legal practitioners, accountants and allied professions, require these graduates to work for them on completion of their studies. The government is justified in following these examples of success. There is of course a crucial proviso to such an argument and that is government’s responsibility to properly look after its medical communities concerns and needs. If this argument is built around a partnership of trust and mutual commitment. SA can achieve great things.

In this context, we believe in the vast potential for community upliftment and the positive contributions these young professionals can make to our nation.
