IS SA A KIDNAPPING HAVEN?

STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

The study by Alexander Forbes Risk Management, which places SA amongst the top ten countries seen as kidnapping havens, raises serious questions.

The UDM will approach the Minister of Safety and Security to clarify whether these figures are accurate or inflated. South Africa is in the midst of a crime crisis, but we have to be cautious not to jump on a bandwagon of selling our country short to overseas investors, leaders and tourists. It is for that reason that we question the motives behind the compilation and distribution of these statistics.

As much as government has a responsibility to address the crime problem, SA companies have to act responsibly and patriotically. It is often claimed by prospective foreign investors that it is SA companies that convince them not to invest here.

The UDM calls once again on government and business to strengthen their partnership against crime, instead of behaving as adversaries that inevitably leads to SA being discredited in the global arena.
