MALARIA EDUCATION NEEDED

STATEMENT ISSUED BY GERHARD KOORNHOF, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR FINANCE

The Minister of Health is yet again repeating a mistake. This is the inevitable conclusion that one draws from an answer to a parliamentary question by the UDM.

Although there is an average annual budget for the national and provincial malaria control programmes amounting to R80 million over the past 3 years, these funds were mainly used in a reactionary manner. It is unacceptable that the department is primarily involved in what it terms "malaria control interventions." This begs the question of why the department has not placed more emphasis on education and awareness campaigns. Surely the most effective tool we have is that of prevention.

This also echoes the government's pathetic approach to HIV/AIDS. Without education and awareness there can be no real progress. It is time that the ANC government critically analyses its approach to health care. Without an effective and integrated health care programme for the country there can be no real economic or social progress.
