UDM CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO MAKE HIV/AIDS A NOTIFIABLE DISEASE

STATEMENT ISSUED BY GERHARD KOORNHOF, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR FINANCE

It is distressing that ONLY a third of top South African companies reported to the public about their employment policy, incidence of fraud and HIV/AIDS according to a recent KPMG report. It is a shame that 2/3 of SA's top companies do not report to their shareholders their response to 3 of the core challenges facing business, and the country as a whole.

The UDM calls on Government to assist all South Africans by making HIV/AIDS a notifiable disease, in order to manage and control this disease. This should however not forfeit the rights of the individual to confidentiality. In doing so and compelling business to include HIV/AIDS statistics and contingent plans in their reports to the public, the South African government and business will be committing themselves to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
