SEWERAGE SPILLAGE THREATEN HEALTH OF CAPE COMMUNITY

STATEMENT ISSUED BY TOMMY ABRAHAMS, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR PUBLIC SERVICE AND ADMINISTRATION

The sewerage spillage in Elsiesriver has exposed the children of the area to a variety of diseases and poses a serious risk of possible epidemic proportions.

Ironically it is Public Services week. The UDM condemns the slackness of municipality officials, who, despite having Batho Pele placards stuck on the walls of their buildings, allow unhygienic living conditions to develop in areas under their jurisdiction.

The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry must also share blame. Water provision and sanitation are badly neglected aspects of national water services. This is illustrated by sewerage spillages in other areas and the outbreak of cholera in KwaZulu Natal.

Situations like these can and must be avoided.
