HOME AFFAIRS DG: CONTRACT OR NOT?

STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR HOME AFFAIRS

The question of whether the Director General of Home Affairs, Billy Masetlha, is operating without a legal contract still remains unanswered.

The UDM finds this state of affairs unacceptable and believes that it shows a complete disregard for responsible and good governance. The matter could again not be resolved at a Parliamentary Home Affairs Committee meeting today.

A proposal to appoint a sub-committee to fully investigate the matter was blocked by the ANC Committee Chairperson, Mr Mokoena.

The UDM believes that merely inviting the Chairperson of the Public Service Commission to address the Committee on this matter will not get to the bottom of the problem. It will not provide all the answers that are required to put a currently unhealthy situation right.

The role of the DG, who is also the Accounting Officer of the Department, is simply too important to let this matter carry on unresolved. In the end it will impact on the taxpayer. It cannot be ignored.

The UDM urges the ANC government and the Minister of Home Affairs to resolve this issue in the interests of good governance.
