UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

NATIONAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT MEDDLE IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT

STATEMENT ISSUED BY DIXON MKONO, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR PROVINCIAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT

The UDM is concerned by the transparent move of the ANC to centralise power at national level. It is unacceptable that the ANC want to side-step democratically elected local councils. It makes a mockery of accountability and democracy.

The UDM condemns these constitutional amendments that will allow direct intervention by national government in the affairs of local authorities that fail to manage their finances properly. This proposal is an indictment of the capacity of provincial governments to ensure financial prudence at local level. Instead of usurping power, national government should assist provincial and local governments in their efficiency of service delivery and financial management.

The UDM hopes that this is not an attempt by the ANC to scale back on constitutionally guaranteed powers and functions of provincial and local governments, which are pivotal to the growth of a stable and democratic society.

It is ironic that these proposed constitutional amendments are nothing other than a vote of no confidence by the ANC national government in the provincial and local governments, which is currently dominated by the ANC.
