HIV/AIDS REPORT BEING SUPPRESSED

STATEMENT ISSUED BY MR. BANTU HOLOMISA, MP
UDM PRESIDENT

The suppression of a Medical Research Council report contradicting President Mbeki’s ideas on the extent of HIV/AIDS related deaths is cause for grave concern. This coupled to the recent comment by the Minister of Correctional Services that his department could soon be facing a flood of legal action against it, by prisoners being infected with the virus, is indicative of the fallacies of the President’s “logic.” Government’s prioritisation is warped, their approach is fragmented and contradictory, and their policy is as clear as mud.

The UDM is concerned by the trend that is developing regarding the way information regarded as politically “incorrect” is being dealt with by the ANC. It increasingly reminds of the way the previous regime dealt with information that did not suit its political agenda. Accountability and transparency, central to the proper function of democracy, is sacrificed on the altar of political expediency. We cannot tolerate that.

The UDM calls on President Mbeki to stop harming the image of the nation, investor confidence and the morale of patients and medical professionals who face the daily battle against this disease. Furthermore, the UDM urges the Medical Research Council to release the report, thereby equipping leaders of this country with relevant information, which would lead to proper decision-making.
