SPOORNET RESTRUCTURING ON HOLD

STATEMENT ISSUED BY TOMMYABRAHAMS, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON ON TRANSPORT

Government is called upon to heed the advice of Spoornet CEO, Zandile Jakavula, who argues against the privatisation of the more lucrative elements of Spoornet. With unemployment rates remaining intolerably high, South Africa cannot afford to further swell the ranks of the unemployed.

Drex, Coalink and the blue train currently help to offset losses suffered particularly by passenger rail services. Should Spoornet not be maintained as a public corporation, the extent of its services runs the risk of being curtailed. Again, it will be the poorer people who will be hardest hit.

The UDM calls upon government to re-evaluate the proposed restructuring of Spoornet.
