UDM CALLS FOR JOB CREATION IN LIGHT OF ARBOR CELEBRATIONS

STATEMENT ISSUED BY MTUTUZELI MBADI, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AND TOURISM

On the eve of the commencement of National Arbor Week, the UDM calls on the Ministers of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Agriculture and Land Affairs and Water Affairs and Forestry to actively promote job creation coupled to flora development projects.

South Africa has global biodiversity significance due to the richness of our species and the variety of ecological splendour bequeathed to us. Proper management of these assets for the benefit of all of the people of South Africa will lead to vital economic empowerment. This may be done by tapping into the existing knowledge base of thousands of people currently deriving their sustenance from the environment, such as wood cutters and rural community members, and combining this with current developments in technological and scientific fields.

The UDM calls on all South Africans to recognise that Arbor Day celebrations are not merely the planting of a tree on a particular day. More than that, it is the social, political and economic responsibility of the entire nation to positively promote job creation coupled to environmental management in all spheres of our daily interactions.

The UDM calls on the Ministers of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Agriculture and Land Affairs and Water Affairs and Forestry to set the example in this regard.
