WINTER FLOODS ON THE CAPE FLATS EXPOSE ANC/DA HYPOCRISY

STATEMENT ISSUED BY MR. D. MKONO, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR PROVINCIAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT

The UDM condemns in the strongest possible terms the inability of local, provincial and national government to address the plight of people on the Cape Flats. Successive ANC and DA governments have relegated these people to the most meagre and inhumane shelter conceivable, and to crown these failures they face annual flooding and homelessness.

The winter rains turn appalling living conditions into a desperate fight against homelessness and disease for people stranded in acres of mud and stagnant pools of water. The winter rains have also exposed the bedrock of hypocrisy upon which the DA and ANC have built their own political homes. The DA finds itself in the centre of an unseemly scandal regarding allegations of corruption in the street renaming exercise of Peter Marias. And recently the UDM has revealed alleged corruption by the DA in the allocation of houses on the Cape Flats. The matter has been referred to the Provincial DA Minister for Local Government and Development Planning, with accompanying affidavits by the UDM and concerned community members on 16 August 2001. The Minister has yet to respond up to this day. These allegations imply a staggering injustice; that DA family and friends get state-built houses while tens of thousands of Cape Flats residents watch their meagre self-made dwellings flooded.

Both the ANC and the DA have failed dismally to address the inhumane living conditions bequeathed on Cape Flats residents. Neither party have been able to deliver and yet both have the temerity to accuse each other.

It is with a sense of disbelief that we observe the way the buck is being passed on this issue between the DA and the ANC, between Council and Province, and between Province and National Government. Both Tony Leon and Thabo Mbeki are on record as being concerned about housing and about corruption. Show us the proof! Tony Leon, especially, must demonstrate that alleged housing corruption by the DA will be dealt with the same seriousness as alleged corruption in street-renaming.
