GOVERNMENT CALLED UPON TO DELIVER

STATEMENT ISSUED BY DICKSON MKONO, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR PROVINCIAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT

The failure to deliver basic services to the majority of South Africans by local, provincial and national government has lead to inhumane living conditions. This appalling reality is exacerbated by the harsh winter that has wrecked havoc with the lives of many millions of South Africans.

Both the ANC and the DA have failed dismally to address the inhumane living conditions bequeathed on Cape Flats residents. Neither has been able to deliver and yet both persist to point fingers at the other. It is pathetic that while these politicians play nit-picking games, many children starve due to malnutrition, and exposure to extreme conditions that leave them vulnerable to life-threatening illnesses and diseases. Many families also suffer as a result of shack fires, which government conveniently and cowardly ignores hoping that this problem will disappear. Let us not forget about the Tornado victims on the Cape Flats who are still waiting for the assistance promised.

Government's inability to do proper planning and execution of those plans that do exist add to the disparity between the haves and have-nots. The harsh winters just serve as a reminder of the reality.

The UDM calls on government on all levels to assist the people of SA by implementing integrated programmes that address housing, welfare, education and economic upliftment issues. The time has long expired for delivery.
