UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION NOT PROTECTING
GIRLS FROM RAPE

STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON ON SAFETY AND SECURITY

The United Democratic Movement again calls on the government to urgently address the shocking rate at which girls are subjected to sexual violence and abuse at South African schools.

A recent lengthy report by The Human Rights Watch, documents how girls are raped, sexually abused, sexually harassed and assaulted at schools by their male classmates and even by their teachers. The UDM calls on government and the Department of Education to develop a national plan of action to address the problem of school-based sexual violence.

The UDM calls on the government to comply with its constitutional and international legal obligations to protect women and girls from sexual violence.
