UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

SCOPA MUST REASSERT ITS ROLE IN ARMS DEAL

STATEMENT ISSUED BY DR GERHARD KOORNHOF, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR PUBLIC ACCOUNTS

The UDM notes with great concern the fear expressed by the Chair of Public Accounts that the Arms Deal Investigation report may not necessarily return to  SCOPA. This is a perilous situation, which must be avoided at all costs. The investigation has been brought into disrepute several times already; such a move would surely condemn this government to infamy for attempting to cover up the truth in a way reminiscent of the Apartheid regime.

It would be a serious blow for Parliament and democracy. It is time that Parliament and SCOPA reassert their roles as watchdogs over the executive.

South Africa is standing with its back to the abyss, if we concede one more step, no matter how small, we are relinquishing the totality (morally, constitutionally, internationally, socially and economically) of all that the new South Africa was intended to be. The UDM calls on the Speaker to confirm unambiguously that she will ensure that the role of Parliament and SCOPA will not be undermined or sidestepped.
