SEWERAGE SPILLAGE EMBARRASSING FOR COUNCIL AND GOVERNMENT

STATEMENT ISSUED BY MTUTUZELI MBADI, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AND TOURISM

It is disgusting that a Metro Council that has millions to spend on inauguration ceremonies, does not have the money or time to deal with a serious health hazard that affects its people.

The spillage of millions of litres of raw sewerage from the Magagula Heights sewerage pump station into the Klip River is pathetic considering the widespread negative impact this accident, that should not have taken place in the first place, will have.

While the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Council and the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry play games with each other, thousands of people living at the informal settlement downstream are using water that may cost them their lives. With the outbreak of cholera in KwaZulu Natal still not under control it begs the question why the government is not acting more swiftly.

The UDM calls upon the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry to urgently address this unacceptable state of affairs. It has far-reaching implications affecting the health and social structures of thousands of people, while affecting the environment - possibly in an irreversible manner.
