COHERENT TELECOMMUNICATION POLICY DESPERATELY NEEDED

STATEMENT ISSUED BY SALAM ABRAM, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR COMMUNICATIONS

The expected about turn by the government regarding its telecommunications policy forces the UDM to call for sanity to prevail.

The UDM appreciates that government is open to the concerns of the industry. However, we strongly believe that the way they have managed the announcements regarding the telecommunications policy has been pathetic. The change in course with each new decision, which has left the industry with no clear direction creates the impression that government is ambivalent about its goals. The result has been a jittery market that does not trust government or its ability to manage the restructuring process.

The UDM hopes that the government will lay all fears to rest with their expected new statement on the telecommunications policy. Failure to do so, and continued market uncertainty undermines the future success of, and income generated by, the Telkom Initial Public Offering.
