MOTOR INDUSTRY STRIKE - NOBODY CAN WIN

STATEMENT ISSUED BY BANTU HOLOMISA, MP
UDM PRESIDENT

The UDM views with growing concern the strike in the motor manufacturing industry. The possibility that hundreds of jobs and millions of rands in investment in the Eastern Cape by Daimler Chrysler are now on the line, raises the stakes to dangerous levels.

The UDM unequivocally supports the constitutional rights of employees and employers to negotiate wages. It must however be said that we have now reached the point where it is necessary for both sides to recognise that the current course of events will lead to a situation where nobody will win. It is crucial now to return to the negotiating table.

South Africa, and especially the Eastern Cape, is in desperate need of foreign direct investment and jobs. The motor manufacturing industry, employers and employees, have proven that it is possible to create world-class products as well as winning solutions for all stakeholders. It is in that spirit that we urge labour and employers to seek a mutually acceptable resolution of their dispute.
