MEDIA RELEASE

GOVERNMENT MUST IMPLEMENT RESPONSIBLE TELECOMS POLICY

STATEMENT ISSUED BY MR SALAM ABRAM, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR COMMUNICATIONS

The UDM welcomes the surprise announcement yesterday by government to award two new fixed line operator licences.

The launch of the telecommunications policy directives are wholly in line with the UDM policy of economic growth and job creation. The UDM's economic policy includes the development of a balanced privatisation programme, thereby improving the confidence of all the participants in the economy. Competitiveness is also a key factor in the UDM's economic policy. To be truly internationally competitive we must have advanced technology, industry and research institutions.

The UDM thus applauds government for implementing the UDM's long advocated approach that would enhance economic and social development. The test will now be to implement this restructuring process in a way that benefits all South Africans and not just a select elite of the ANC cronies.
