CALL TO ASSIST CHOKKA FISHERMEN

STATEMENT ISSUED BY PROF MTUTUZELI MBADI, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AND TOURISM

The UDM calls upon the government to assist these fishermen, in the same manner as farmers have been assisted with special emergency loans during drought periods. These special loans would go a long way to preserving the industry, protecting the jobs of thousands and preserving a way of life for many.

The fate of approximately 5 000 South African chokka fishermen seems very uncertain. This year's fishing season has yielded very low catches mainly due to cold ocean conditions.

Many of these fishermen are breadwinners in their families and do not possess any other means of income. With the possibility of banks repossessing assets such as safe and seaworthy boats and fish processing plants, many fishermen face bankruptcy. With black businessmen beginning to take the lead in the industry, these poor catches could spell their end.
